Langham Industries were quick to see the potential of the former Portland Naval Base when its sale was announced by the Ministry of Defence. The company took over control of the harbour in 1996, and Portland Port, as it is now known, has been undergoing continual development ever since; a process which is likely to continue for many more years.
Ideally positioned only a few miles from the busy English Channel shipping lanes, Portland provides a deep water harbour sheltered from all wind directions and accessible at all states of the tide. Today the harbour is a thriving commercial port and its adjoining landside is being developed for the benefit of the wide variety of businesses which can take advantage of the opportunities the Port provides.
Portland Port provides a full range of facilities to visiting ships be they cargo vessels, naval vessels, or the increasing number of cruise ships whose passengers are able to explore the many attractions of the beautiful west of England. The Port can currently accommodate vessels up to 300m LOA, and has water depths alongside of 11.6m C.D. A new berth to accommodate vessels up to 330m LOA will be available in 2016.
